Description:

The head coach is responsible for planning and administering all aspects of the men’s basketball program and reports to the Athletic Director. The Head Coach is responsible for maintaining the integrity of the program, maintaining an exemplary student-athlete concept, and the personal development of the student-athletes.  The head coach should model the NAIA Champions of Character core values and follow all rules and regulations pertaining to the NAIA.  The interim position is performance based and can be adjusted to permanent full time position.

Primary Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

  1. In charge of all aspects of running a college program at the highest level.
  2. Plans, supervises, and conducts all practices and conditioning sessions in preparation for all athletic competitions.
  3. In charge of the recruitment of all student-athletes in the program, acts as a liaison with the admissions and financial department during the recruiting process.
  4. Acts as an academic counselor to the student-athletes and creates an environment that is conducive to retaining and graduating students from OLLU.
  5. Counsels all team members in academic, disciplinary, athletic, and personal matters on a regular basis.
  6. Plans, supervises, and collects all information regarding game preparation and designs a game plan and strategies to be successful in all athletic contests.
  7. In charge of setting up a complete competitive schedule within the budget guidelines and NAIA guidelines.
  8. Participates in annual continuing education programs regarding NAIA rules.
  9. Participates in public relations activities and fund raising.
  10. Ensures the highest professional standards and behavior with regard to adherence to NAIA rules and regulations.
  11. Prepares and submits a budget that is cost-effective and administratively efficient.
  12. Assists the Athletic Director in all areas pertaining to the men’s basketball program and the athletic department.
  13. Works with the Sports Information Director throughout the year to communicate accomplishments and endeavors of the team, both on and off the court
  14. Contributes to the maintaining of good working relationships with all athletics staff members, faculty and campus recreation staff members.
  15. In charge of all fundraising for the program, camps, clinics, and outside speaking arrangements dealing with the men’s basketball program
  16. Expected to raise money for all post-season play and for any potential overages in any area including but not limited to equipment, insurance, books, travel, etc.
  17. Subscribes and adheres to the NAIA Coaches Code of Conduct.
  18. Subscribes and promotes the NAIA Champions of Character student development.
  19. Submits transportation requests and required travel documentation to the Athletic Director as required.
  20. Assists in special events and tournaments, championships, fundraisers, and/or clinics to include, but not limited to, major fundraisers, camps, and/or clinics.
  21. Subscribes and adheres to the NAIA Coaches Code of Conduct.
  22. Subscribes and promotes the NAIA Champions of Character student development.
  23. Attend all scheduled meetings.
  24. Assist in enrolling student-athletes according to OLLU Admissions policies and standards.
  25. Adhere to Residence Life procedures to securing housing accommodations.
  26. Communicate effectively with all academic/faculty advisors, financial aid, business office, registrar and other university personnel.

Additional Responsibilities:

  1. Supervise any volunteer associated with the men’s basketball program.  Must oversee and expect them to represent the program in all areas that define the NAIA Champions of Character.
  2. Active participant in the Student Life Division and Athletic programs and activities.
  3. Acts as a liaison with the Athletic Trainer pertaining to all insurance paperwork, injury reports, and the rehabilitation of the student-athletes throughout the season.
  4. Other duties and responsibilities assigned by the Athletic Director.
  5. Serves a liaison for the university community of faculty, staff, students and administrators.
  6. Will adhere to university policies, state and federal laws concerning Title IX, HIPPA, and FERPA policies.
  7. Contribute and support the university vibrancy initiative.
  8. Assist and maintain inventory at the beginning and end of the academic year.
  9. Assist Head Coach with conducting business within the limits of the allocated budget.
  10. Recruit within the limits of the scholarship budget.
  11. Support all athletic department activities and fundraisers


Requirements:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  1. Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals, technical aspects, and strategy for assigned sport.
  2. Ability to recruit and retain qualified athletes and to facilitate timely progress toward graduation.
  3. Knowledge and understanding of all rules and regulations pertaining to the NAIA division I level.
  4. Effective oral and written communication skills.
  5. Ability to operate the basketball program within the budget parameters.
  6. Understanding of and commitment to the catholic faith and its traditions.
  7. Ability to work with multiple other departments on campus.
  8. Excellent administrative, organizational, and communication skills.
  9. Exceptional Leadership skills and the ability to communicate with the media, parents, public and OLLU staff and faculty in a positive manner.
  10. Solid knowledge base of student development and player development.
  11. Solid knowledge base of academic progress and the academic support services offered at OLLU to help facilitate timely progress toward graduation.
  12. Ability to be successful at the National level in the particular sport.

Education and Experience:

  1. Master’s Degree in Physical Education, Sports Management, or a related field required.
  2. Three years of college or national level federation coaching experience in the assigned sport required.
  3. Fundraising, classroom instructor, camp director, and campus recreation experience preferred.
