Description:

The California Institute of Technology (Caltech), an NCAA Division III institution and member of the SCIAC, seeks candidates for the position of Volunteer Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach. In compliance with NCAA and conferences rules/regulations, responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, assisting the Head Men’s Basketball Coach with all aspects of program operations, such as: recruiting elite academic student-athletes, video management, editing, and analysis, team travel, administrative and programming tasks, practice and game preparation, scouting of opponents, advanced analytics, individual training, on-the-floor coaching, scheduling, fundraising, community and alumni outreach, camps and clinics, and other duties as assigned by the Head Coach.

The successful candidate must possess outstanding leadership, communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills and have thorough understanding of NCAA Division III and SCIAC regulations.

Job Duties

  • Demonstrating a high level of teaching and coaching competency in sport skill instruction, sport strategy, tactics and rules, physical training and fitness and student motivation in practice execution.
  • Demonstrating a sincere interest in the social, emotional, academic development, as well as the athletic welfare of student-athletes; collaborating on academic monitoring and guidance of students where appropriate.
  • Exhibiting the highest professional standards and ethical behavior with regard to adherence to the NCAA, SCIAC Conference, Caltech and the Department of Athletics and Recreation’s values statement, including sportsmanship on and off the field of play, positive leadership and the desire and ability to act as a positive role model and representative of the Institute at all times.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills including: writing, speaking, and listening.
  • Contributing to the maintenance of excellent working relationships with all members of the Department and promoting the philosophy and objectives of the intercollegiate athletic program on and off campus.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications

  • Must be knowledgeable and skilled in all areas of the sport, eager to learn, and have a strong interest in recruiting qualified scholar-athletes.
  • Knowledge of SCIAC & NCAA rules and regulations.
  • Must possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to maintain accurate attendance and other informational record keeping.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to maintain it throughout the course of employment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Each coaching staff member may be required to perform physical tasks such as:

  • lifting, carrying, loading sport specific equipment; up to 80 pounds,
    -set up and tear down of sports contest support equipment;
    -some care and maintenance of sport specific or general athletic facilities
  • Must possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to maintain accurate attendance and other informational record keeping.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and two or more years of relevant experience.

*Preference will be given to those with a strong undergraduate academic record.

  • CPR, AED, First Aid certifications preferred.
  • Collegiate playing experience preferred.
  • Organized coaching experience preferred.
  • Teaching through digital images; creating and using emerging technologies. Advanced computer skills, proficiency in video editing, and knowledge of advanced analytics are preferred.

Position requires passing the NCAA DIII rules test and COVID vaccination.
