John Brown University first year head men’s basketball coach Jason Beschta announced this morning the appointment of Ty Beard as his assistant coach.
"I am so excited to have Ty joining us at John Brown," admitted Beschta. "Having worked with Ty for the last three years has helped us become quite a dynamic duo. Not only am I bringing along a great coach, but also a good friend.
"Ty was instrumental in our success the last three years at Oklahoma Wesleyan. His tireless work ethic, his prowess in player development and his ability to build relationships and influence lives for Christ will make him an integral part of not only the JBU men’s basketball program, but the university and the community as well. A basketball program is often successful based on the quality of the assistant coaches and, if that holds true, then it’s going to be a great time to be a Golden Eagle."
Beard spent the previous three seasons under Beschta at Oklahoma Wesleyan where the Eagles finished the trio of campaigns with an overall mark of 62-36 (.633) and 32-12 (.727) in Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference play. After the first two seasons that featured 16-16 and 21-10 records, respectively, Beard assisted Beschta and the Eagles to a 25-10 record in 2013-14, which was highlighted by a 12-2 conference record and a regular season conference co-championship.
After dispatching Central Baptist (Ark.), 97-62, in the quarterfinals, Wesleyan downed Ozarks (Mo.) in the semifinals by a score of 100-90 in overtime. In the finals, OKWU faced Bellevue (Neb.) in Bartlesville, Okla. The Bruins were able to escape with an 87-75 win, but Beard and the Eagles were still awarded an at-large berth to the 2014 NAIA National Championships, where it was able to knock off then-No. 12 Morningside (Iowa) in the round of 32 before falling in the round of 16 to eventual national champions, Indiana Wesleyan.
"I am extremely excited to be a part of a basketball program with as much tradition and success as John Brown," Beard said. "It is truly an honor to work at an institution that excels both academically and athletically, while still maintaining strong Christian values. I appreciate the opportunity that Robyn Daugherty has given me and I also want to thank Coach Beschta for allowing me to contribute to the future success of JBU basketball."
Prior to Wesleyan, Beard spent six seasons with basketball program at Baylor University while both an undergraduate and graduate student. From 2005-09, he served as a student manager before being promoted to head manager in his senior year. Baylor enjoyed success during those years and posted a 64-55 record (.538), but while Beard served as a graduate assistant, the Bears notched a 28-8 mark in 2009-10 and an 18-13 record in 2010-11. In 2010, the Bears made an appearance in the NCAA Elite Eight.
Beard finished his undergraduate requirements in 2009 and received a Bachelor of Science in education before completing a Master of Science in education with a concentration in health, human performance and recreation in 2011.
Beard and his wife, Meagan, reside in Siloam Springs.
