Drew Schauss has been selected as the next assistant men’s basketball coach at John Brown University, head coach Jason Beschta announced Tuesday (July 25) morning.
“We are fortunate to have brought in a coach of Drew’s caliber,” noted Beschta. “As both a player and a coach, he has been a part of some great programs where he has learned what it takes to help young men be successful at high levels in the classroom, on the court and in life. Drew is going to make our program better in so many ways, and I am excited about what the future holds.”
Schauss comes to Siloam Springs after a two-year stint at Holy Cross (Ind.) where he helped guide the Saints to a 29-32 record (.475) and a pair of wins over NAIA Division II top-25 opponents. During his tenure, the Saints featured two All-Chicagolands Collegiate Athletic Conference selections, seven CCAC All-Academic honorees and three NAIA Scholar-Athletes.
Prior to Holy Cross, Schauss spent a pair of seasons as an assistant at Bethel (Ind.), where the Pilots racked up a combined 55-15 record (.786). In the 2013-14 season, Bethel captured the Crossroads League tournament title and finished the season with a quarterfinals appearance at the NAIA Division II National Championships. The next season, the Pilots enjoyed a 27-7 mark, including berths in the CL tournament championship game and the NAIA Division II National Championships.
While at Bethel, Schuass helped produce two All-Americans and the CL Player of the Year.
Schauss spent three of his collegiate playing years at NCAA II Brevard (N.C.) before the 6-foot-4 guard transferred to Bethel for his senior campaign. Over his career, the Greens Fork, Ind. native scored 815 points, pulled down 373 rebounds and started 57 times in 120 career appearances. Schauss also earned NAIA Scholar-Athlete and Academic All-Conference honors as a senior and had a hand in helping the Pilots earn a NAIA Scholar-Team selection as a senior.
In his lone season at Bethel, Schauss helped the Pilots to a CL tournament title and an appearance in the Round of 16 at the NAIA Division II National Championships.
At Brevard, Schauss averaged just over seven points and three rebounds per game, but more importantly, helped the Tornados capture a South Atlantic tournament title with a 93-92 upset win over top-seeded Catawba (N.C.) in the championship game.
A graduate of Bethel in 2013, Schauss earned a Bachelor of Science in biology and is set to earn a strength and conditioning specialist certification this fall.
