The Texas Southern University Board of Regents has approved a three-year contract extension for head men’s basketball coach Johnny Jones, Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics Kevin Granger announced Friday.
The extension will keep Jones as head coach of the Tigers through the 2029 season.
Since Jones’ arrival at TSU in 2018, the Tigers have participated in five consecutive postseason tournaments (3 NCAA, 2 CIT) with five postseason wins. TSU has participated in five consecutive SWAC Tournament Championship games under his watch and has finished no less than third place in five of his six years at the helm.
Jones has achieved several career milestones at Texas Southern during his tenure as he recently won his 400th career game this past March while also earning his 100th win at TSU in February. Several players have surpassed 1,000 career points under Jones’ watch as several student-athletes have had the opportunity to play professionally both domestically and overseas while also producing four student-athletes who were named HBCU All-Stars. In 2024, Jones also served as a co-head coach of Team Ben Wallace in the third annual HBCU All-Star Game in Phoenix, Ariz.
“Coach Jones has done an outstanding job in maintaining and enhancing the tradition of the men’s basketball program at TSU,” said Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Kevin Granger. “Since arriving at TSU six years ago, the college basketball landscape has evolved quickly, and Coach Jones has successfully navigated TSU through these changes both on-and-off the court and has us well-positioned to remain as one of the top programs in the SWAC and region.”
“I extend my heartfelt gratitude for the generous contract extension by our esteemed TSU Board of Regents, Madam President Dr. Mary Evans Sias, and VP of Athletics Dr. Kevin Granger,” said Jones. “We are deeply honored by the trust and confidence they have placed in us. This extension not only signifies a commitment to our team but also reflects a shared vision to push the boundaries of excellence in our program.
“We are excited about the future and opportunity to continue to serve. Winning championships, educating, and graduating our student-athletes will remain our focus. Our journey together allows us to elevate our program to new heights on the court, in the classroom, and within the community. Thank you for your unwavering support and belief in our mission.”
