Denver Sharrow, of Ironwood, was appointed as the new Gogebic Community College Head Men’s Basketball Coach, succeeding Dennis Mackey, who is retiring after 38 years.

A former standout student-athlete under Mackey from 2016–2018, Sharrow earned the Long Shot Award in 2017–18 after shooting 47% from three-point range. He joined the program as an assistant men’s coach in 2021, later serving as co-head coach of the women’s team in 2023 before becoming sole head coach in 2024.

“Denver has consistently demonstrated the ability to recruit quality student-athletes and build competitive teams,” said Athletic Director Jennifer Sabourin. “With his experience leading our women’s program and background with our men’s team, I am confident in his ability to continue our tradition of success. We are also confident in our ability to identify a strong leader to build upon the foundation he established with the women’s program.”

Sharrow expressed gratitude for the opportunity.

“It’s an honor to coach where I once played, and I’m excited for the challenge,” he said. “Coaching the women’s program has been incredibly meaningful, and I’m thankful for the relationships built along the way. I’m grateful for the support of my wife and family, as well as Dr. Sabourin and Coach Mackey for their trust, mentorship, and guidance. I’m truly honored and humbled to follow in the footsteps of such a successful, respected leader and advocate for the college. His impact on Gogebic Community College and its basketball program is lasting and immeasurable.”

Gogebic Community College will soon post openings for the head women’s basketball coach and assistant men’s basketball coaching positions.

Sharrow holds an Associate of Arts in Business Administration and a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance from the University of Wisconsin–Green Bay. He currently serves as TRiO Coordinator in Student Support Services at GCC.
