Rock Valley College has named Nick Ramos the next head men’s basketball coach, the program’s 14th head coach. Coach Ramos will make the leap from assistant coach to head coach after being Tyler Bredehoeft’s top assistant in 2022-23. The Golden Eagles were 20-12 in their first NJCAA DII season. Ramos was heavily involved in recruiting, player development, and scouting. In his first season as the lead assistant, Ramos aided the development of two NJCAA DII All-Region IV players in George Williams and Antonio Leavy, and NJCAA Rising All-Star Blessing Nwotite.
Prior to landing at Rock Valley, Ramos was the lead assistant at NJCAA Division 1 Marshalltown Community College in Marshalltown, Iowa for two seasons in 2020 and 2021. In each of his seasons at MCC, the Tigers improved in the win column, including the most wins in a season since 2018-2019, Ramos’s final year. At Marshalltown, Ramos coached six all-region performers, including two first teamers.
Ramos began his coaching career at his alma mater Rockford University as a graduate assistant in 2018. At RU, Ramos coached two First Team All-Conference players and was part of the coaching staff that led the team to their first conference tournament appearance in six years.
Coach Ramos was born in Montebello, California and graduated from Millennium High School in Goodyear, Arizona. He attended Rockford University in Illinois in 2014 and played all four years, earning the 2018 NABC (National Association of Basketball Coaches) Honors Court award before graduating with his BS in Accounting. Ramos would later earn his Masters in Business Administration with a finance emphasis in 2020.
“I am extremely excited to be in the Rockford community to continue to build on the history of this program,” stated Ramos. “I am very thankful for the opportunity that President Dr. Howard Spearman, Vice President Dr. Patrick Peyer, Athletic Director Mr. Darin Monroe and the search committee to have selected me as the next head coach to lead Rock Valley College moving forward.
“We are thrilled to promote Nick Ramos into the position of our Head Men’s Basketball Coach here at RVC,” said Athletic Director Darin Monroe. “As we conducted a national search, it became very apparent that Nick has a genuine love for our department, the city of Rockford and our Men’s Basketball program. His work ethic, relationships with our student-athletes and understanding our program expectations stood out. He has been mentored by great coaches and understands what it takes to be successful. I am excited for the future of RVC Men’s Basketball under the direction of Nick Ramos.”
