Here are some of the names that have started to surface as the quest to replace Frank Martin at Kansas State begins.
Tim Jankovich – Head Coach Illinois State. He is a Kansas State alum (’82), who is 104-64 in his 5 seasons at Illinois State (21-14 this season). Has also been the head coach at North Texas and was an assistant to Bill Self at Illinois and Kansas.
Steve Henson – Assistant Coach Oklahoma. Another K-State alum (’90) – also a McPherson, KS native. Was at UNLV as an assistant for 7 seasons before following Lon Kruger to Oklahoma last spring. Was the 40th overall pick in the 1990 NBA draft and played with five teams in the NBA – Milwaukee, Atlanta, Charlotte, Portland and Detroit.
Brad Underwood – Associate Head Coach Kansas State. You guessed it…another K-State grad (’86), and oddly enough, also hails from McPherson. Has been on the K-State staff 2006 when Bob Huggins was the head coach. He has had stints as a head coach at the junior college level at both Dodge City (Kan.) Community College (1988-93) and Daytona Beach (Fla.) Community College (2003-06). In between those stints, he was the top assistant to head coach Jim Kerwin at Western Illinois from 1992-2003.
Larry Eustachy – Head Coach Southern Mississippi. His squad went 25-9 this past season. Spent 5 seasons as the head coach at Iowa State (101-59). Has also been the head coach at Idaho and Utah State. According to sources, he has expressed interest in the job.
**Note: Many are saying that Colorado head coach Tad Boyle could be a candidate because of his relationship with K-State AD John Currie (Boyle was an assistant at Tennessee during the time that Currie was an athletic department staffer). I’m not buying it however. Boyle has said repeatedly that Colorado is where he wants to be, and already spurned the Nebraska job.
