Georgia Southern men’s basketball coach Mark Byington announced today that he has named Keith Chesley director of operations.
Chesley arrives in Statesboro after spending last season at Stetson, where he was responsible for all aspects of team travel and equipment while also assisting with video, scouting, and the day-to-day operations of the program. Chesley will have many of the same duties at Georgia Southern, including supervising the managers, assisting the coaching staff in limited on-court activities during practice, on-campus recruiting and coordinating all of the team’s video needs.
“Even though Keith is fairly new to the business, he has very good experience performing the requirements for the director of the basketball operations,” said Byington. “He has been around some programs that I have great respect for and comes with a tremendous reputation. I love the fact that he has strong work ethic and is hungry to be successful in Division I basketball.”
Chesley spent two seasons as a graduate assistant with the men’s basketball team at Florida State before moving on to Stetson. He coordinated the Leonard Hamilton Basketball Camp in 2017, while also assisting with individual workouts and team travel. He also managed on-campus recruiting visits and was responsible for supervising the team’s undergraduate managers.
A 2016 graduate of the University of Maine at Augusta, Chesley was a two-time All-American and a two-time all-conference performer for the Moose during his four years. Chesley was named the National Student-Athlete of the Year in 2015 and was a four-time Academic All-American. He is the all-time leading scorer (2,119 points) in UMA history. The Clinton, Maine, native earned a master’s degree in sports management from Florida State in 2018.
Chesley replaces Alex Meltzer, who left Georgia Southern for a job opportunity in his hometown of Atlanta.
“Alex did a very good job for us as a manager, graduate assistant and director of operations,” said Byington. “He had a positive impact on our success as a program, and we wish him the best as pursues life in the business world.”
