Texas College has announced the appointment of Coach Kelan Jones as the new Head Men’s Basketball Coach, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the Steers basketball program. A native of Dallas, Texas, Coach Jones brings more than two decades of experience in athletics, education, and player development to the position.
A proven program builder and multiple-time Coach of the Year honoree, Jones has earned recognition across Dallas ISD and District 13-5A for his leadership, integrity, and ability to transform teams into championship contenders. His career reflects a deep commitment to developing well-rounded student-athletes who excel both on and off the court.
Before joining Texas College, Jones served as Athletic Coordinator and Head Boys Basketball Coach at Hillcrest High School (Dallas ISD), where he led a transformative athletic program grounded in leadership, service, and academic achievement. His emphasis on discipline, accountability, and teamwork elevated the school’s athletic culture and student performance.
Earlier in his career, Jones made a lasting impact as Head Women’s Basketball Coach at both South Oak Cliff High School and Sunset High School, where he mentored standout athletes — including the first Hispanic female basketball player in Sunset history to earn a Division I scholarship. Over the years, he has coached and developed numerous players who have gone on to compete professionally in the NBA and overseas.
At Texas College, Coach Jones plans to build upon the institution’s proud athletic tradition by fostering a culture of excellence that emphasizes academic success, personal growth, and athletic achievement. Guided by his core philosophy, “Discipline & Dedication Determines Your Destination,” Jones aims to prepare scholar-athletes to be leaders in competition and in life.
“Coach Jones embodies the vision and values of Texas College Athletics,” said Coach Burwell, “His record of success, his commitment to student development, and his leadership style make him the ideal choice to lead our men’s basketball program into a new era.”
Jones is married to his college sweetheart, Karyn Jones, and together they have several loving children and three grandsons, whom they cherish deeply.
