Keuka adds assistant

Keuka College has hired Brennan McCarthy to serve as the assistant men’s basketball coach and also the head golf coach for the Storm’s men’s and women’s teams.

McCarthy will assist head men’s basketball coach Thad Phillips with all aspects of the basketball program, including both the day-to-day operations as well as recruiting future student-athletes to come to campus.

In addition to his basketball coaching duties, McCarthy will also take over for Phillips as the Storm’s golf coach.

“I’m extremely excited for this opportunity and hope to bring success to both the men’s basketball program and the golf program as Keuka pursues the NEAC Presidents Cup (awarded to the institution with the highest overall winning percentage from the past academic year),” McCarthy said.

“The opportunity to return to the state of New York to coach is something that interested me a great deal. Coach Phillips has done a great job rebuilding the program and I am excited to join his staff and get to work.”

McCarthy, 25, a native of Cobleskill, N.Y., spent the past two seasons serving as a graduate assistant coach for the Frostburg State University (Md.) men’s basketball team. The Bobcats compiled a 23-29 record in his two years as assistant coach while playing in the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC).

A two-year member of the basketball team at SUNY Cobleskill, McCarthy played both point and shooting guard and led the Tigers into the NJCAA Final Four in 2007-08 after going 26-8 at the then-junior college institution. He earned an Associate of Arts degree in liberal arts and sciences in May of 2008.

He then attended The College at Brockport where he graduated in December of 2010 with a Bachelor’s degree in physical education.

During the 2008-09 season, McCarthy, a shooting guard, and his Golden Eagles captured the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) championship and earned a spot in the NCAA Division III tournament.

The Storm’s men’s basketball went 10-13 overall and 8-7 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) during the 2012-13 season. The Green and Gold won the most games in a season since the 2008-09 campaign.

McCarthy said he’s excited to get started on this new coaching challenge.

“I plan to bring my energy and enthusiasm to both sports. My hard work and dedication will help bring both the men’s basketball and the golf teams to championship contender status,” said McCarthy, a Cobleskill resident who has experience dealing with recruiting student-athletes, preparing scouting reports and breaking down game film.
