Eighth-year Cal Poly men’s basketball head coach Joe Callero completed the program’s support staff for the upcoming season Monday afternoon with the announcement that Kevon Davis has been appointed as the team’s freshly-created director of player development.
Davis, who arrives at Cal Poly after serving the previous two seasons as the assistant coach at two-year Casper (Wyo.) College, will be tasked with overseeing player performance in regards to the strength and conditioning and nutrition programs, monitoring academic progress, helping coordinate travel, maintaining social media accounts and serving as a liaison between Cal Poly’s players and the campus and San Luis Obispo communities.
“Kevon has a great personality, excellent attitude and great passion for basketball,” Callero said. “He’ll relate well to our players and lead and motivate them in all of our endeavors on and off the court.”
Prior to helping coach Casper College to a 47-18 combined record and an appearance in the NJCAA Top 25 coaches poll, Davis was an assistant coach at Harcum College (Bryn Mawr, Penn.) from 2010-14. With Davis on the bench, Harcum compiled a 100-29 record and reached the 2014 NJCAA Tournament Final Four.
During his previous six seasons, 18 players coached by Davis transfered to Division I programs.
As a player, Davis was a two-year letterwinner at both West Chester University (West Chester, Penn.) and Harcum College. A native of Upper Darby, Penn., Davis graduated from West Chester in 2010 with a degree in professional studies.
Cal Poly, which recorded its highest scoring average in 14 seasons last year and finished 16th among NCAA Division I programs with just 10.3 turnovers per game, is expected to return 10 letterwinners from its 2015-16 squad for the upcoming season.
