The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi men’s basketball staff has added Yaphett King as an assistant coach, Head Coach Willis Wilson announced today. King comes to the Island University after spending the last four seasons as the head coach at Redlands Community College.

King led Redlands to 72 wins in his tenure as the team’s head coach. He led the team to 21 wins and a spot in the National Junior College Athletic Association Tournament in the 2010-11 season. He coached current Islander Joy Williamson for two years, helping the El Reno, Okla., native earn First Team All-Region recognition as a sophomore.

On the court, King began his playing career at Redlands in 2002, where he helped the team to the NJCAA Division II National Championship in posting a 31-2 record. He averaged 15.6 points and 7.6 rebounds in his debut season and was named an All-American following the season. He went on to play at Cal State Fullerton, helping the Titans to the Round of 16 in the National Invitation Tournament in 2005. He then went on to play professionally in Austria for two seasons.

He returned to Redlands as an assistant coach in 2007, helping the team to a 31-2 record as regional runners-up, and saw seven of his players move on to NCAA Division I programs. He then spent a year as an assistant with Cowley College, helping that team to an identical 31-2 record and a spot in the regional championship game.
