King Rice Earns Third MAAC Coach Of the Year Honor

For the third time in six seasons, Monmouth University Men’s Basketball Head Coach King Rice has been named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. Rice becomes the third coach in MAAC history to earn the honor three times, and is the first coach in Monmouth history to win this award multiple times.

Rice joins former Saint Peter’s Head Coach Ted Fiore (1986-87, 1988-89, 1990-91) and ex-Niagara and current Hofstra head man Joe Mihalich (1998-99, 2004-05, 2012-13) in being the only MAAC coaches to ever win Coach of the Year three times. Rice has won the conference’s regular season three times, and has been named the league’s top coach in all three of those years.

The Binghamton, NY native, who was the 2016 and 2017 honoree in addition to this year, earned his 150th career victory earlier this season and led Monmouth to a league-best 12 wins and the MAAC regular season crown. Earlier this week, three of his seniors were named to all-league teams as the Hawks posted a 7-2 mark at home and were one of five MAAC teams to go .500 or better on the road.

MU has now had a MAAC major award winner eight times in eight seasons in the league, with Justin Robinson winning Player of the Year twice, Micah Seaborn earning 2016 Rookie of the Year, and Austin Tilghman and Andrew Nicholas both collecting Sixth Man of the Year honors in addition to Rice’s three Coach of the Year trophies.
