Klusman announces retirement at Rollins, Hogan Elevated to Head Basketball Coach

Rollins College has announced the retirement of Head Men’s Basketball Coach Tom Klusman after more than four decades on the job.

During the 2024-25 season, Coach Klusman took a leave of absence, and interim head coach Kevin Hogan stepped up to lead the program. We are pleased to announce that Coach Hogan will now take over the program as the permanent head coach.

“Coach Klusman has been the cornerstone of Rollins College Men’s Basketball for more than forty years. His unwavering dedication to our student-athletes and his passion for the game have profoundly shaped our program. Having had the privilege of working closely with Tom for over twenty years, I have witnessed his remarkable commitment and impact firsthand,” said Rollins Associate Vice President of Athletics, Pennie Parker. “We fully support Tom in his retirement and wish him all the best. As we move forward, I have full confidence in Kevin’s ability to lead our program. His work ethic and commitment to the college will ensure that our team will maintain the high standards of excellence established by Tom.”

Coach Klusman joined Rollins College as a standout guard in 1972, and has since laid the foundation of the Rollins basketball program. Under his guidance, the Tars have achieved numerous milestones, including seven Sunshine State Conference regular season championships, four SSC Tournament titles, and eight NCAA Division II postseason bids. His career record of 755-489 ranks him among the top coaches in NCAA Division II history. He ranks 13th all-time among Division II coaches in career wins, and 37th all-time among all coaches at all levels of NCAA play. He retires with more career wins than Rick Pitino, John Beilein, Mark Few, and Tom Izzo and dozens of others Hall of Fame coaches.

In 2023, Klusman was the recipient of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Golden Anniversary Award, given annually to one person who has spent 50 or more years impacting the game of basketball. Other accolades include South Region Coach of the Year (2x), Sunshine State Conference Coach of the Year (6x), the Rollins Sports Hall of Fame (1992), and the Sunshine State Conference Hall of Fame (2000).

Under Coach Hogan’s interim leadership this past season, the team went 16-14 overall, with nine wins in conference play, earning a 7-seed in the SSC tournament. His ability to guide the team through a challenging season has demonstrated his readiness to take on the permanent head coach role.

A native of Pensacola, Hogan was part of the Tars program for five seasons as a player and is currently 24th on the all-time scoring list with 1,295 career points. He is second all-time in program history with 270 made three-pointers and third in three-point percentage, hitting 44 percent from beyond the arc. Hogan was named SSC Honorable Mention his senior season in 2009. Hogan was a part of two Sunshine State Conference regular season championship teams and won the 2006 SSC Tournament. Twice he led the Tars to the NCAA South Region Tournament. Hogan’s teams posted a four-year record of 88-34, making him one of the winningest players in program history.

Coach Hogan graduated from Rollins with a bachelor’s degree in political science in 2007, before going on to earn his MBA in finance from the Crummer Graduate School of Business at Rollins in 2009. His coaching stops include Florida A&M, Tallahassee Community College, William & Mary, and Austin Peay before joining the Rollins staff as an assistant coach in 2018. Coaching basketball at the collegiate level runs in the Hogan family as his father Don was also the head coach at the University of West Florida from 1993-2009.

Parker added, “Coach Hogan has shown exceptional leadership and a deep understanding of our program’s values. His dedication to our student-athletes and his strategic vision for the future make him the ideal person to lead our team. I have an unwavering belief in Kevin’s ability to continue building on the strong foundation of our program as we enter an exciting new chapter in our basketball program’s history.”
