I hope everyone is enjoying their Labor Day! Here are a few DI items that I’ve heard while being bunkered down in the HD World Headquarters…
• Multiple people have reported that Arizona State will go to the NBA to fill their two open assistant positions. Former Sacramento Kings and Golden State Warriors head coach Eric Musselman and Portland Trailblazers scout Larry Greer are expected to replace Scott Pera and Lamont Smith on Herb Sendek’s staff. Musselman has been coaching in the NBADL for the past few years, and won the D-League Coach of the Year award this past season. Greer has also worked as a scout for the Houston Rockets, and was a college assistant at Boston University and Wright State.
• I have heard that Marquette head coach Buzz Williams is considering bumping up DBO Jerry Wainwright to replace recently released assistant Scott Monarch (http://hoopdirt.com/blog/1716f8e5/hot-marquette-fires-assist…). Wainwright, who was the associate head coach at Fresno State last season, joined the Marquette staff back in June. He has spent 16 seasons as a DI head coach (DePaul, Richmond, UNC-Wilmington), compiling a 244-225 record.
• It sounds like former Maryland guard Eric Hayes will join the Terps staff in a yet to be specified role. Hayes played at Maryland from 2006-2010and has been playing overseas since then. He scored over 1,200 points as a Terrapin, and averaged nearly 4 assistants per game for his career. Look for an official announcement sometime this week.
• Multiple sources have told me that Bryant College will promote DBO James Sorrentine to assistant coach. He would replace Dwayne Pina who became an assistant at Brown earlier in the summer (http://www.hoopdirt.com/news/dd35810f/brown-names-assistants…). Sorrentine has been at Bryant since 2011, and has also been an assistant at both St. Michael’s (VT) and Rhode Island College.
