Lackawanna College Names Brian Coyle Head Men’s Basketball Coach

Lackawanna College and its Athletic Department have announced that it has hired Brian Coyle as their Head Men’s Basketball Coach. No stranger to Lackawanna Basketball, he served as an assistant coach during the 2014-2015 season.

On learning of his selection as Lackawanna’s next head basketball coach, Coyle said, “I am looking forward to returning to Lackawanna. It is a unique opportunity where I have the ability to make an impact on the lives of young men, by developing their abilities as players on the court and their core values as an individuals off the court”. He added, “There is also the satisfaction of having a part in those young men fulfilling their dream of moving on to the next level”.

Coyle, a former Misericordia University standout, spent the last five seasons as an Assistant Men’s Collegiate Basketball Coach. This past season was spent with the University of Scranton for the 2015-2016 season, where he helped the Royals to a NCAA DIII tournament appearance while collecting a 19-7 record. During that season the Royals were ranked as high as 21st in the country. The 2014-2015 season was spent with Lackawanna College and the 3 prior seasons were spent at Marywood University. Brian’s main roles for the University of Scranton, Lackawanna College and Marywood University were scouting, game preparation, local/regional recruiting and community relations. Prior to Brian’s collegiate experience, he spent three years as Assistant Varsity and Head Junior Varsity Coach at Bishop McDevitt high school in Harrisburg.

At Bishop McDevitt, Coyle helped lead the junior varsity team to a 44-18 record in three seasons while helping the varsity team qualify for district playoffs in 2009-10 for the first time in 12 years.  The following season, he helped McDevitt reach the state playoffs for the first time in 16 years with a 17-10 record.  In addition to his coaching duties, Coyle was the Booster Club President and in charge of all fundraising duties for the program.  He was also in charge of scouting and game planning.

A 2003 graduate of Misericordia, Coyle helped guide the Cougars to a 16 win season during his senior year; which at the time, was the most successful season in  Misericordia’s basketball history.  Still ranked 5th all-time in assists at Misericordia, he earned the 2003 Coaches’ Award and graduated with a degree in Business Administration with a minor in Human Resources.

Prior to Misericordia, Coyle attended Bishop Hannan High School where his 1999 team earned PIAA State Runner-up status in Class A.  That year, Hannan was also the District 2 Champion and Lackawanna League Champion.  Coyle was named the team MVP, a Lackawanna League All-Star and a Regional All-Star.
