Lafayette staff update

Lafayette men’s basketball head coach Fran O’Hanlon has announced the promotions of Pat Doherty ’04 and Donovan Williams and the addition of former assistant John O’Connor to his 2012-13 coaching staff.

Doherty recently completed his third season on the staff at his alma mater and had been serving as the program’s second assistant prior to the recent departure of Josh Loeffler to Rutgers. Prior to coming to Lafayette, Doherty had spent one season each as an assistant coach at Williams College and The College of New Jersey.

Williams enters his third season at Lafayette. Williams served as a graduate assistant for the Georgia Tech men’s basketball program from August 2008 to May 2010.

O’Connor begins his second stint at Lafayette, previously serving as O’Hanlon’s assistant for three seasons from 2001-04, two of which were as the top assistant. He left Lafayette for Georgia Tech where he became the director of basketball operations and later an assistant coach under Paul Hewitt, spending six seasons (2004-10) in Atlanta. O’Connor left Georgia Tech in April of 2010 to become the head coach at Holy Family University. After his time at Holy Family, O’Connor worked and travelled with USA Basketball’s Under-19 team coached by Hewitt which competed in the world championships in Latvia in the summer of 2011. O’Connor also spent time coaching youth basketball and training professional players during the NBA strike.

A native of Philadelphia, O’Connor began his assistant coaching career at Drexel where he spent eight seasons with the Dragons, helping them to three NCAA Tournament appearances and two NIT berths. He also served as an administrative assistant at Villanova in 1992-93.
