Lake Superior State University men’s basketball head coach Steve Hettinga announced the appointment of Ted Stowe as an assistant coach on his staff.

Stowe, who spent the past five seasons (2012-17) as a student assistant coach at Spring Arbor (Mich.) University, will also serve as head coach of the Lakers’ junior varsity men’s basketball team.

“Ted came highly recommended from his former head coach Ryan Cottingham,”  said Hettinga, who starts his 11th season at LSSU this 2017-18 campaign and is the all-time winningest coach in Laker men’s basketball history.  “It didn’t take me long to realize the praise was warranted.

“Coach Stowe is very passionate about basketball and more importantly, helping people.  He’s a great addition to our staff,”  added Hettinga, a two-time (2014-15) Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Coach of the Year Award recipient.

During his time at Spring Arbor, Stowe was responsible for overseeing the program’s day-to-day operations, home and away game details, video breakdown, and social media account.  Prior to joining the Cougars’ staff, Stowe coached two years of youth basketball and worked various summer camps.  Stowe earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Spring Arbor in 2017.

A 2012 graduate, Stowe played two seasons (2010-12) of organized basketball for his homeschool team in Kalamazoo.

“I’m excited to join the Lake Superior State family,” said Stowe.  “My time at Spring Arbor has prepared me well and I’m grateful to Coach Hettinga for giving me this opportunity to be part of his staff.  I believe the Lakers have a great program and impressive track record under Coach Hettinga.

“I look forward to helping coach this team,” added Stowe, who was born in South Korea.

Stowe joins fellow assistant Rodney Clarke as the latest newcomers to head coach Steve Hettinga’s coaching staff.

“Both of these individuals (Ted and Rodney) have high character and fit the culture we have in our program,” Hettinga said.   “I couldn’t be happier with both hires.”
