It’s been less than 24 hours since Steve Roccaforte was dismissed at Lamar, but three names have begun to emerge as the leaders to replace him. The three strongest contenders so far appear to be:
Alvin Brooks – Associate Head Coach Houston. Has been at UH for 13 seasons. Was the head coach from 1993 to 1998. Also worked at as an assistant at Texas Tech (1999-01), North Texas (2001-03), UTEP (2003-04) and Texas A&M (2004-07) – pretty good Texas connections. Was the starting point guard for two NCAA Tournament teams at Lamar that posted a combined 47-6 record in his two seasons at the school.
Scott Monarch – Assistant Coach Marquette. Has worked at a number of Texas JC’s (Panola, Tyler, McLennen, and Navarro). He left Panola as the all-time winningest coach there. Has the support of Texas native Buzz Williams.
Glynn Cyprien – Assistant Coach Memphis. A former Lamar assistant. Has been a high major assistant at Kentucky, Arkansas, UNLV, Oklahoma State, and UNLV. He graduated from Texas-San Antonio.
