Northern Illinois University men’s basketball head coach Mark Montgomery announced the addition of Lamar Chapman to the Huskie men’s basketball staff as an assistant coach. Chapman joins NIU from Stony Brook University, where he has been an assistant coach for the past nine seasons.

“I am very pleased to have Lamar Chapman joining our staff at NIU,” said Montgomery. “Lamar is a seasoned veteran who brings a wealth of experience at a championship-level program from his time at Stony Brook. He is also familiar with the MAC and the Midwest from his time at Central Michigan and Toledo.

“I have known Lamar since his days coaching high school basketball in Michigan and he is an excellent recruiter, an outstanding teacher of the game and builds tremendous relationships with his players. Among his many other strengths are his abilities with individual skill development, on-court coaching and scouting of opponents; Lamar will be a great addition to our staff.”

In his nine seasons, Chapman helped the Seawolves to four conference regular season championship, the 2016 America East Tournament title and seven postseason appearances, including Stony Brook’s first Division I NCAA Tournament appearance in 2016. During his tenure at Stony Brook, Chapman worked primarily with wings and helped a pair of Seawolves, Muhammad El-Amin and Tommy Brenton, earn America East Player of the Year honors.

Since Chapman’s arrival prior to the 2008-09 season, Stony Brook has posted six 22-plus win seasons and the Seawolves have had 23 all-conference selections.

“I’m excited to have the chance to work with a friend, a guy that I have known for over 20 years in Coach Monty,” said Chapman. “I’m excited to be back in the MAC, my first five years in the business were here and I am happy to be back in the Midwest, back in the MAC, and ready to roll-up my sleeves, get to work and help make this program a winner.”

Prior to his time at Stony Brook, Chapman spent the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Toledo. In his first season, Chapman helped the Rockets earn their first Mid-American Conference regular season crown in 26 years as Toledo posted a 14-2 conference mark. Chapman helped mentor Keonta Howell, Justin Ingram and Florentino Valencia to All-MAC honors as well as 2006-07 MAC Defensive Player of the Year, Kashif Payne.

Toledo was Chapman’s second stop in the MAC as it followed three years as an assistant coach at Central Michigan University. Before beginning his collegiate coaching career in Mt. Pleasant, Chapman was the head coach at Muskegon Heights (Mich.) High School in his hometown, leading the Tigers to a 42-9 overall record and a pair of state semifinal appearances, including a Class B State Runner-Up Finish in 2002. That season, Chapman was named the Muskegon Chronicle area Coach of the Year.

Chapman played collegiately at Lane College in Jackson, Tenn., where he was named the school’s Athlete of the Year in 1991 and 1992. Chapman earned his bachelor’s degree from Lane in health and physical education in 1993.
