Landers hired as Navarro’s Head Coach

Navarro College hired Michael Landers as its new men’s basketball coach Friday.

Landers, who coached Trinity Valley’s women’s basketball program to two unbeaten NJCAA Women’s Tournament Championships (2004 and 2012), was chosen among an application pool of about 50. The Gladewater native was selected from three finalists, advancing from nine interviews Tuesday by a Navarro College screening committee.

Landers spent 10 years with TVCC (2000-09 and 2010-12), most recently serving with his wife, Kenya, as a co-head coach winning a national championship in 2011-12. He posted a 335-39 record and led the Lady Cardinals to two national championships and two undefeated seasons in 2012 and 2004. In his overall coaching career, Landers is 436-61. Landers also coached at East Texas Baptist University and Baton Rouge Community College.

He spent the 2010-11 season at Baton Rouge Community College, where he served as athletic director and head women’s basketball coach. Landers led the first-year program to a 22-6 record and conference championship. He received his second JUCO National Coach of the Year award last year.

In his nine previous seasons as Lady Cardinal head coach, he amassed a 265-36 record to become the second-winningest coach in the program’s 35-year history. Landers won eight conference championships and five regional championships. At five national tournaments, his squads twice finished seventh and once sixth to go along with the national title in 2004.

Landers came to TVCC from East Texas Baptist University. The ETBU women were NCAA Division II runners-up two consecutive years and compiled a 75-16 record in the three years he served as head coach. They were Heart of Texas Conference champions in 1998 and NAIA Far West Region Champions in 1999.

Landers replaces Johnny Estelle, who resigned earlier this month and accepted an assistant coaching position on coach James Dickey’s staff at The University of Houston.
