Larson steps down at Iowa Lakes; McKinney elevated to Head Basketball Coach

Jason McKinney has been named the new Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Iowa Lakes Community College. McKinney has served as the Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach since 2011 and was the Men’s Basketball Graduate Assistant at Iowa Lakes from 2009 to 2011. McKinney’s promotion came on the heels of Troy Larson being selected as the next Executive Dean of Students at Iowa Lakes.

“Jason has been an integral part of our program, assisting with recruiting, practices, workouts, scheduling, academic monitoring, and coaching the team daily. He deeply understands the Iowa Lakes culture and what it truly means to be a Laker. I am proud of his dedication to the program and know he will serve our student-athletes well on and off the court. I couldn’t think of a better person to hand the program over to,” said Troy Larson, Athletic Director.

Before McKinney’s time as Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach at Iowa Lakes, he also served in a similar role at St. Ambrose University and as head varsity basketball coach at Calamus/Wheatland High School for two seasons.

McKinney has his Master of Education from Iowa State University (ISU), a Bachelor of Education in Physical Education from St. Ambrose University, a Bachelor of Science in Sports Management from ISU, and an Associate in Arts from Eastern Iowa Community College.

“I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity and look forward to carrying the tradition and team culture established by Coach Larson. He has been a fantastic mentor and colleague. We have a lot of good returners for next season and an excellent recruiting class coming in the fall. I am excited to see what we can do as we begin a new era at Iowa Lakes,” said McKinney.

McKinney will assume his new role as the Head Men’s Basketball Coach on July 1, pending board approval.
