Lawson named Assistant Basketball Coach at State Fair CC

State Fair Community College Head Coach Matt Brown has announced the hiring of Kyle Lawson as the new assistant men’s basketball coach. Lawson comes to Sedalia with experience as a player and coach at the NCAA Division II and junior college levels.

“Coach Lawson will be a welcome addition to the Roadrunner family,” said Brown. “He has had great success at the NCAA Division II, as well as the junior college level. Most importantly, he will serve as a great role model and mentor to the young men in our program.”

Lawson began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Black Hills State University (BHSU) and later returned to become an assistant coach and helped the team to its first appearance in the NCAA National Tournament, advancing to the Final Four. He helped the program to a pair of RMAC Conference Championships and an RMAC Tournament Championship. Lawson developed scouting reports and served as recruiting coordinator. He also coordinated all travel and served as the camp coordinator.

Lawson was an assistant coach at Dawson Community College in Glendive, Montana, where he helped the program to its first appearance in the NJCAA National Tournament. He helped his team to conference, region, and district championships, finishing the season with a 23-3 record. Lawson created scouting reports, executed skill development workouts for all guards, posts and redshirts, and assisted with the development of daily practice plans. Lawson implemented academic plans for the team that finished 14th in the country in team grade point average.

He earned an associate degree from Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, California. He holds a bachelor’s degree in History from Metropolitan State University of Denver and a master’s degree from Black Hills State University in Strategic Leadership.
