Seattle Pacific University men’s basketball head coach Grant Leep announced the addition of David Choi to his coaching staff on Monday.
“I am very excited to have Coach Choi join our coaching staff,” Leep said. “He is a hard worker and is eager to be involved with our guys. He adds energy and enthusiasm to all aspects of our program.”
Choi joined Coach Leep’s staff at Seattle Pacific in the summer of 2022 after spending two years as an Assistant Coach at Hillsdale College in Michigan. While at Hillsdale, Choi helped push the Chargers to become one of the nation’s premier NCAA D2 teams. The Chargers were ranked in the top 25 polls in both years with an overall record of 46-11, capped off by back-to-back NCAA Tournament Regional Final appearances.
Hillsdale College’s historic 2021-’22 season witnessed an NCAA Midwest Regional Championship and a berth to the NCAA Elite 8 for the first time in program history. The season followed on the heels of a 2020-’21 campaign where Hillsdale College went 21-3 en route to a regular season championship, a top seed in the NCAA D2 National Tournament, and an NCAA Sweet 16 berth.
Choi helped develop seven All-Conference honorees, including a consensus NCAA All-American in both seasons. Choi was integral in recruiting the four-player 2021 class, which featured an average GPA of 3.9. The class included the 2021-22 Conference Freshman of the Year.
Choi is no stranger to the Pacific Northwest. Before his time at Hillsdale College, Choi was the head coach at The Northwest School where the team earned a WIAA Academic State Championship. He also spent time at Decatur High School, becoming the South Puget Sound League Coach of the Year. He got his start at Lakewood High School as the youngest head coach in the state at age 23.
Choi has experience at the grassroots level as Founder, Director, and Head Coach of the Northwest Greyhounds from 2012-2016. He has had a hand in developing a bevy of future collegiate and professional players through that program.
Choi is joined in Seattle by his wife, Anna, and son, Damian (7).
