Norwich University head men’s basketball coach Paul Booth announced the addition of Levy Gillespie II as his new lead assistant coach on Tuesday.
Gillespie replaces Michael Shewmaker, who served as the full-time assistant coach for the past four years. Shewmaker left in July to take over as the Bryant and Stratton (Albany, N.Y.) head men’s basketball and assistant athletic director.
Gillespie comes to Norwich after spending the last two seasons as an assistant coach at his alma mater Post University in Waterbury, Conn. Gillespie helped guide the Eagles to a 19-10 record during their last full season of competition in 2019-20. He has served as an AAU coach with the Windsor (Conn.) basketball club.
“I am honored and truly blessed to be a part of Norwich University and the men’s basketball program,” Gillespie said. “This is an opportunity to be a part of something great and to be able to learn and gain more experience under Coach Booth. I am thankful for the opportunity and will strive to be the best I can be every day here.”
Gillespie spent three seasons at Post, averaging seven points a game as a senior. He also served as a team captain in his final season as an Eagle, leading the team to 10 victories. Prior to transferring to Post, Gillespie started his collegiate basketball career at the University of New Haven.
Gillespie played and coached under former Norwich University assistant men’s basketball coach Marc Kuntz, who spent three seasons in Northfield and had a large part of bringing in the recruiting classes that led the Cadets to back-to-back GNAC Tournament titles in 2005 and 2006. Kuntz has served as the Post University head men’s basketball coach since 2016.
“I am thrilled to welcome Levy to Norwich and our basketball program,” Booth said. “His experience playing and coaching at the scholarship level will have an immediate impact on our team. He learned under the tutelage of former Norwich assistant coach Marc Kuntz, who is an outstanding teacher of the game. I am really excited to work with Levy this upcoming season.”
Gillespie earned his Bachelor’s degree in Sports Management from Post in 2019. He also earned a Master’s of Business Administration in 2020.
