Robert Morris University Pat Gallagher Head Coach Andrew Toole has announced the addition of Kim Lewis as an assistant coach.
“Kim is an excellent and experienced teacher, recruiter and coach of the game,” said Toole. “We are excited to have him as a part of our staff. He has been around winning for the majority of his career and has been a big factor in that success.”
Lewis brings more than 20 years of Division I coaching experience to the Colonials. He arrives in Moon Township after spending the past five seasons at Mercer, coaching seven SoCon All-Conference players a total of eight times with the Bears. He helped Mercer advance to its first-ever SoCon title game for the first time in program history in the 2020-21 season.
Prior to Mercer, Lewis served on Richmond’s staff from 2011-19 with the last seven as an assistant coach. The Spiders won 19-plus games in four different seasons during Lewis’ tenure, including 22 in 2016-17 when they made a run to the NIT semifinals.
Before Richmond, Lewis was an assistant coach at Texas A&M – Corpus Christi under his former Tulane coach Perry Clark during the 2010-11 season. Lewis had two stints as an assistant coach at Tulane (2008-10 and 1997-99) where he coached Linton Johnson, who won an NBA Championship with San Antonio in 2005.
From 2006-08, Lewis was at Duquesne after spending a pair of seasons at Northeastern (2004-06) where he coached JJ Barea, a 2011 NBA champion with Dallas. He also coached at McNeese State (2003-04) and Xavier University of Louisiana (2002-03).
As a player, Lewis was the Metro Conference Freshman of the Year at Tulane in 1991. He set the school’s career record for steals (242) and is third in games played (125). Lewis scored 1,384 points, currently the 13th most in program history.
Lewis led the Green Wave in scoring his sophomore campaign with 15.4 points per game, helping the school to its first conference crown and its first-ever berth in the NCAA Tournament which included a first-round victory over St. John’s and a national ranking as high as No. 14.
A two-time member of the Tulane Athletics Hall of Fame, Lewis was inducted in 2014 as an individual and in 2020 as a member of the 1991-92 squad.
In 1995, Lewis was drafted in the seventh round (92nd overall pick) in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA) draft by the Sioux Falls SkyForce. He also played professionally in the Icelandic Basketball League (IBL) from 1998 to 2001. He led his IBL squad to a championship, earning MVP and best all-around player honors. Kim also doubled as his team’s head coach in his first season.
A native of Angie, La., Lewis earned a bachelor’s degree in Media Arts/Communications from Tulane in 1994.
