St. Mary’s Men’s Basketball Coach Bubba Meyer has begun building his staff with the hiring of David Lewis as the Associate Head Coach.
Lewis is no stranger to the Lone Star Conference and the work it takes to succeed in the difficult league. He spent the 2022-23 season at Texas A&M International after spending the previous seven years at Angelo State.
At both institutions, Lewis not only coached the team, but also assisted as the academic coordinator with the team, helping student-athletes stay on task in the classroom and make informed decisions on degree progress.
“We are thrilled to welcome David to the St. Mary’s family,” stated Executive Director of Athletics Robert Coleman. “He has demonstrated the ability to be an excellent basketball coach in working with student-athletes to be the best athletically and by prioritizing academic success. His leadership will be a welcome addition and I look forward to the future successes Coach Meyer and David will have with our Men’s Basketball program.”
“My family and I are thrilled to be coming to San Antonio and joining the St. Mary’s University community,” Lewis said. “Bubba Meyer has been a longtime friend to me, and I cannot wait to help him bring in a new era of Rattlers Basketball.”
Prior to joining the Lone Star Conference, Lewis spent two seasons in the NBA, working with both scouting, operations and video with Orlando and San Antonio’s affiliate in Austin.
“David has been a friend and competitor for years,” said Meyer. “Competing against him at ASU and TAMIU for years on the court and in recruiting provided me with an insight into his tenacity and competitor as a recruiter and as a coach. This program is so special to all those involved, and David has a strong understanding of that. His work at UT and in the NBA has given him an arsenal of experience well beyond many. We are thrilled to have David and his family become a part of Rattler Nation!”
Lewis earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Texas at Austin, graduating with a bachelor’s in pure mathematics in 2011 and his master’s in physical education teacher education in 2014. He begins work with the Rattlers immediately.
