Liberty extends McKay through 2030-31

Liberty University and men’s basketball head coach Ritchie McKay have agreed on a contract extension through the 2030-31 season.

McKay is the winningest coach in program history and has helped usher the Flames into the Conference USA era over the last two seasons. The 2024-25 season has seen McKay and Liberty post a 23-6 overall record and 11-5 mark in CUSA play entering the final week of the regular season. McKay became the program’s all-time wins leader with victory No. 260 on Jan. 25 at FIU and is up to 267 wins in his 12 seasons with the Flames.

McKay and the Flames have posted eight 20-win seasons over the last nine years. Over the last six seasons (entering the year), Liberty has won three conference tournament titles and qualified for the NCAA Tournament three times. In addition, McKay and the Flames have four conference regular season titles and one divisional title (ASUN East Division: 2022) over the last six seasons along with five conference tournament championship game appearances in the last seven years.

Liberty has nine wins over Power 4/high major schools in the last eight seasons, most recently defeating Kansas State in the 2024 Paradise Jam semifinals. The Flames went on to win the Paradise Jam title, defeating a 30-win team from the year prior in McNeese in the championship game.

McKay has the Flames in the upper echelon of college basketball over the last seven seasons. Liberty has won 172 games since the start of the 2018-19 season, good for seventh most in the nation during that span.

Liberty is currently ranked No. 74 in the NCAA Men’s Basketball NET Rankings and No. 73 in the KenPom rankings.
