It sounds like Louisville will name an interim head coach to replace recently fired Rick Pitino as early as today. Three names have surfaced over the past 24-hours…
Yesterday, Rival.com’s Corey Evans reported that current assistant coach David Padgett will be the choice. The 32-year old former Cardinal player reportedly has the backing of the players. The other hot name out there has been former Indiana head coach Tom Crean. Apparently he has some backing from at least one booster, but it’s unclear if Crean would be willing to give up his TV gig and jump back into coaching so quickly. Finally, a name that I’ve heard multiple times from coaches in the area is Bellarmine head coach Scott Davenport. The former Louisville assistant has had a ton of success at Bellarmine (down the road from Louisville) – he won the 2011 DII National Championship, and is 287-93 during his tenure at the school.
All signs point to an announcement being made today. More on this as soon I hear it.
