The University of Louisville has scheduled a press conference for Friday to introduce Kenny Payne as the Cardinals new head basketball coach. The hiring of Payne is pending board approval, but according to CBS Sports, that is just a formality.
Payne is a Louisville alum, who won a National Championship as a player in 1986. He spent this past season as an assistant with the New York Knicks, but was a long-time college assistant before that. Payne spent 2010-20 as an assistant to John Calipari at Kentucky, and worked at Oregon from 2004-09.
Following his playing career at Louisville, Payne was selected by the Philadelphia 76ers as the 19th pick in the 1989 NBA Draft. He played in the league until 1993, and then spent some time overseas.
Payne will replace Chris Mack who was fired by Louisville at the end of January.
More on this after it becomes official on Friday.
