Mike Magpayo has been named Director of Player Development at Campbell University, head men’s basketball coach Kevin McGeehan announced on Friday. Magpayo joins the Fighting Camel program from Columbia University where he served the past four years on head coach Kyle Smith’s staff.
During Magpayo’s tenure at Columbia, the Lions program enjoyed the most successful 4-year run in the program’s history, culminating in a 21-win campaign in 2014, the most basketball wins at the school in 40 years.
"We are thrilled to add Mike Magpayo to our staff," said McGeehan, who is in his second year in charge of the Fighting Camels. "He will be a huge asset in his role as director of player development. Before he began coaching at Columbia, he was highly successful in the business world. Mike’s well rounded and dynamic skills will be an invaluable as he will undoubtedly leave and indelible mark on our program."
Magpayo spent two seasons at Columbia as assistant coach and two as director of operations. He was responsible for scheduling for the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons. In his first year with the program, Magpayo created the infrastructure for Coach Smith’s detailed and complicated "moneyball"-type statistics program that was implemented daily. He helped build databases for recruiting as well as creating the platform for the most successful prospect camp in the Ivy League over the last three years.
During the 2013-14 season, Columbia won seven of the nine games in which Magpayo prepared the scouting report, and the team won more than 60 percent of games he scouted over the last three years.
In addition to scouting and scheduling, Magpayo was responsible for coaching team rebounding last year and Columbia finished as the fourth-best defensive rebounding team in the country. As recruiting coordinator, he recruited All-Ivy League guard Maodo Lo from Germany, and also two of the team’s top freshmen in 7-foot-1 Conor Voss and Luke Petrasek.
"I am absolutely thrilled to join Coach McGeehan and the Campbell Basketball community," said Magpayo, a 2001 graduate of UC Santa Barbara. "This is an exciting opportunity with a top-notch staff to build on an up-and-coming basketball program. I am ready to get to work!"
Prior to his stint at Columbia, Magpayo ran a multi-million dollar real estate firm in California. However, he was always passionate about coaching and coached high school basketball for 10 years starting during his undergraduate days at UC Santa Barbara until 2010. Magpayo’s coaching stops included Laguna Blanca High School, Redondo Union High School, Newport Harbor High School and Aliso Niguel High School.
