Marcus Reed hired as West Virginia State Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach

West Virginia State University Head Men’s Basketball Coach Bryan Poore announced Marcus Reed as Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach on Tuesday morning. Reed interned with the Marshall University men’s basketball program prior to joining the Yellow Jackets.

“We are excited to add Marcus to our staff,” stated Poore. “He has a variety of experiences as a player in two sports and worked as an intern with the Marshall basketball program. I look forward to working with him as we put together this year’s team.”

Reed is conversely looking forward to the opportunity of coaching under decorated WVSU Head Coach Bryan Poore.

“I’m excited to start my coaching career at the college level with a tremendous basketball mind like Coach Poore,” exclaimed Reed.

Reed expects to gain invaluable experience from the 20-year veteran coach while resuming his involvement in the game that he is so passionate about.

“Getting to share my knowledge with the players to help them become better both on and off the court has always been a dream of mine,” said Reed.

Reed attended Riverside High School in Belle, W.Va. where he became the school’s all-time leading scorer with 1,301 points. He was selected All-State Honorable Mention twice during his junior and senior years. In his senior year of high school, Reed was also named First Team All-MSAC.

Furthermore, Reed starred as a wide receiver on the Riverside Warriors football team. He ranked third in the Mountain State Athletic Conference in receiving with 45 catches for 880 yards and eight touchdowns during his senior year and garnered Second Team All-MSAC honors in the process. His overall athleticism earned him an offer from Glenville State College where he signed to play football at the NCAA Division II level.

After one year at Glenville State, Reed decided to shift his focus towards academics and transferred to Marshall to study Sport Management. He famously competed in a one-on-one game against former Duke standout and NBA journeyman Chris Duhon at ‘Rock the Rec’ after being chosen by his peers as the best basketball player among them. Reed’s performance did not go unnoticed as he later walked on to the Thundering Herd men’s basketball team.

Reed graduated from Marshall with a Bachelor of Arts in Sport Management in May of 2017 with a 3.3 grade point average. He continued his studies at Marshall post-graduation, earning a Master of Science in Sports Administration by May of 2019 with a 3.91 GPA.
