New Maritime College head coach Jake Scott has added Duane Woodward and Mike McSloy to his staff as assistant coaches.
Woodward comes to Maritime after a 13-year professional career overseas. Throughout his career, he played in 10 different countries and saw success for numerous teams, most notably during his tenure in the Cyprus League for AEL Limassol. Woodward helped lead AEL to back-to-back championships in 2003 and 2004 and was named Eurobasket.com All-Cyprus League Player of the Year and All-Cyprus League First Team, as well as the 2004 Eurobasket.com All-FIBA EuropeLeague Player of the Year, All-FIBA EuropeLeague First Team. Woodward was a two-time All-Star in his career and was also named to the 2008 Eurobasket.com Cyprus League All-Imports Team.
Since returning back to the States, he has turned to coaching, but has still been playing professional as well. He has served as the seniors/prep coach for the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) team the New York Panthers since 2008 and has also been a coach or instructor at numerous camps, including the University of Pennsylvania Basketball Camp and the Fairfield University Basketball Camp.
McSloy may go down as, arguably, the best two-year player in Maritime basketball history. He served as team co-captain during the 2011-12 season. Over the past two seasons, he recorded 841 points while also bringing down 153 rebounds for the Privateers. He was also clutch from the free-thrown line, converting on nearly 80% of his free throws (211-for-266, 79.3%). McSloy was named to the Second Team All-Skyline Conference after the 2011-12 season. Prior to his time with the Privateers, he spent two years playing for Oswego St.
McSloy is finishing up his studies at Maritime and is expected to graduate in May 2013.
