University of Maryland men’s basketball coach Mark Turgeon announced today that Cliff Warren has been named assistant coach and Nima Omidvar will assume the responsibilities as director of basketball operations.

Warren originally joined Maryland as the program’s director of basketball operations at the end of April.

“Cliff has been an outstanding addition to our staff this offseason,” Turgeon said. “Soon after working with Cliff, I realized that I already had the best person in place to assume the role of assistant coach. He has made a seamless transition into our program and will continue to be a valuable asset with his strong ties to our region and his head coaching experience at the Division I level. Throughout his career, Cliff has been recognized and well-respected for his knowledge of the game, his recruiting ability and his development of players on and off the court.”

Warren spent the past nine seasons as head coach at Jacksonville University, where he became the program’s all-time wins leader (126) and led the Dolphins to a pair of Atlantic Sun Championships in 2009 and 2010. He was also named Atlantic Sun Coach of the Year after the 2009 season.

A native of Silver Spring, Md., Warren spent five seasons as an assistant to Paul Hewitt at Georgia Tech, where he helped lead the Yellow Jackets to 96 wins and three NCAA Tournament appearances – including the school’s first-ever trip to the NCAA National Championship game in 2004.

Prior to joining the Tech staff, Warren spent three years (1998-2000) as an assistant at Siena College under Hewitt, where he helped lead the Saints to a 66- 27 record, two postseason berths and three straight appearances in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament finals.

A 2008 graduate of the University of Maryland, Omidvar joins the Maryland staff with a decade of coaching experience at the collegiate and high school ranks. During his five seasons as a collegiate coach at NC State and Bowie State, Omidvar has played an integral role on teams that have advanced to four NCAA Tournaments.

“We’re happy to welcome Nima back to the University of Maryland,” Turgeon said. “Nima is a great addition to our staff and it’s always exciting to bring back a member of the Terrapin family. His coaching experience combined with the inroads he has made in our community through his background in grassroots basketball makes him the ideal person for this position.”

During his tenure at NC State from 2011-14 as the team’s video coordinator, the Wolfpack advanced to three consecutive NCAA Tournaments and progressed to the Sweet 16 in 2011-12. Omidvar worked with 2014 ACC Player of the Year T.J. Warren and was instrumental in helping NC State to three consecutively highly-acclaimed recruiting classes – 2011 (5th), 2012 (8th), 2013 (11th).

Omidvar’s responsibilities at NC State included hosting official and unofficial visits, scouting of opponents, scheduling opponents for the upcoming season and academic monitoring.

Prior to his time at NC State, Omidvar served as the assistant coach for one season at Bowie State (2010-11). The Bulldogs finished with a 23-6 record and were CIAA North regular season champions. Under Omidvar’s direction, Bowie State finished the season ranked 19th nationally in Division II.

Omidvar began his collegiate coaching career as a graduate assistant at UNC Charlotte for the 2009-10 season. He was also involved in number of grassroots basketball efforts in Washington, D.C., which included Nike DC Team Takeover, DC Metro Prospects and the I-270 Basketball Club.

Omidvar graduated from Maryland in 2008 with a degree in economics and attended Damascus High School in Damascus, Md.
