Northwood University (Fla.) head coach Rollie Massimino achieved a coaching milestone, capturing his 700th career win, as the Seahawks defeated visiting Valor Christian, 106-73, in their opening game of the 2012 Chuck Daly Memorial Classic, hosted at Northwood University.
With the victory, Massimino becomes the 35th coach ever to amass 700 wins in the NCAA and NAIA. He has had stops as a head coach at Villanova, UNLV, Cleveland State, Stony Brook, and Northwood (FL).
Over the years, Massimino has racked up numerous awards over his career. In 1985, he was tabbed as National Coach of the Year by both MacGregor SPorting GOgds and Playboy magazine, and in 1982 he earned the first of eight Big East Coach of the Year accolades, honored on a league basis in the NCAA. In 2011, he was named the NAIA National Coach of the Year and earned the Rawlings National Coach of the Year in 2012.
Massimino took his Villanova program to the top in 1985, when the Wildcats pounced on a heavily-favored Georgetown team to take the NCAA Championship on April 1. During his tenure at Villanova, the Wildcats earned 16 postseason tournament berths, with 11 being in the NCAA tournament. In Villanova’s 12 season of Big East play under Massimino, his squads earned two regular-season titles, advanced to the conference championship game three times and compiled a 110-80 (.578) regular-season record.
