Vice President for Athletics Melody Cope has announced that John Mateyko has been named Dowling’s head men’s basketball coach this Tuesday, September 9th.
"Coach Mateyko brings a strong record of success on the court, in the classroom and in the community," said Vice President for Athletics Melody Cope. "He is committed to developing his student-athletes on and off the basketball court. We are excited to welcome John and his family to our Golden Lions athletic family and look forward to much success during his tenure."
Mateyko comes to Dowling by way of St. Joseph’s College where he spent the last 13 seasons leading the Golden Eagles becoming the program’s winningest coach in the history of the men’s program, posting ten double-digit winning seasons, two NCAA Tournament appearances and one Skyline Conference championship during his tenure. His overall record is 190-129 (02-13) and he has won two Skyline Conference Coach of the Year awards (’07-’08 & ’11-’12).
During his tenure, Mateyko guided the Golden Eagles to two NCAA Division III tournaments (once as conference champion and once as an at-large selection), several appearances in the NCAA’s Atlantic Region rankings and multiple selections to the ECAC Metro Tournament.
"I would like to thank Melody Cope for the opportunity to be a part of this program," said Mateyko. "I am very excited to be part of the Dowling College community and hope to build on last year’s winning team."
Last season, the Golden Lions finished 22-7, their first 20-win season since 1997-98. Dowling posted a 16-4 mark in East Coast Conference play to earn the top seed in the Championship Tournament.
John and his wife, Kathleen, currently reside in Long Beach with their son, John Richard.
