Maurice Williams has been named an assistant coach with the Stevenson University men’s basketball program.
Williams comes from Frostburg State University as the programs top assistant in 2015-16. He was involved with all aspects of the program with an emphasis on recruiting, player development and opponent scouting. Williams also played for the Bobcats from 2009-12. As a senior in ’12, Williams became the program’s first All-Capital Athletic Conference selection after being named to the first team. A Columbus Ohio native, Williams led the CAC during his final year in scoring, offensive rebounding and free throw percentage. He was named team MVP and recorded six double-doubles. Williams was also named to the Capital Athletic Conference All-Academic team his senior year.
Williams spent 2014-15 season as an assistant coach at Salisbury University under Josh Merkel. The Sea Gulls won the Capital Athletic Conference tournament title for the first time since the 1995-96 season. It was the fifth-best record in the 86 years of the program and the first 20-win season since 1996-97. Salisbury defeated Eastern Connecticut State (66-54) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
After Salisbury, Williams coached briefly at St. Mary’s Ryken High School in Leonardtown, Md., before returning to Frostburg.
Williams was an assistant head coach at Eastern University for two years from 2012-14. During his tenure, the team improved its win total in the 2013-14 season and finished as the most improved team in the Middle Atlantic Conference. Williams had a hand in recruiting, video coordinating and he served as the head coach of the JV team. He recruited one of the best players in program history Shaquan Turk, who reached 1,000 career points his junior season and was a two-time All-Conference selection.
Williams started his career at the junior college level as a volunteer assistant at Richard Bland College in Petersburg, Virginia. He also brings experience as a head AAU coach for Competitive Edge, located in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania.
While at Frostburg State, Williams received his B.S. in Liberal Studies with a minor in Coaching in 2011. Williams received his M.S. in Coaching Education from Ohio University in 2015, graduating with high distinction.
