Former Weber State standout and Big Sky Conference MVP Kellen McCoy has been named an assistant coach with the Wildcat men’s basketball team, WSU head coach Randy Rahe announced Tuesday.
“We couldn’t be more excited to have Kellen join our staff,” Rahe said. “He fits us perfectly as a coach, as he did as a player. He has great work ethic and character and will be a valuable asset to our program and players. Kellen understands our culture and the expectations that we put on our players and he will be a great ambassador for our program.”
In his new role with the Wildcats McCoy will assist in all areas of the program including recruiting, scouting and player development. He comes to Weber State after spending last season as a graduate assistant under head coach Lon Kruger at the University of Oklahoma. He spent the 2011-12 season as an assistant coach at Emporia State, a Division II school in Kansas. He also played two seasons of professional basketball in Sweden.
McCoy, a native of Norman, Okla., was a standout player in his two seasons at Weber State from 2007-09. As a junior in 2007-08 he played in all 30 games for the Wildcats and averaged 8.8 points per game. The following season as a senior he was named the 2009 Big Sky Conference MVP after leading Weber State to a 15-1 Big Sky record and a conference title. He averaged 14.1 points and 2.8 assists per game as a senior and led the Big Sky in three-point field goal percentage in conference games.
In two seasons at Weber State, the 5-6 guard played in 61 games and averaged 11.5 points and 2.3 assists per game. In March he was named to the Weber State 50th Anniversary Team.
