University at Albany men’s basketball head coach Will Brown announced the appointment of former center Blake Metcalf to the staff for the 2014-15 season. The Camby, Indiana native will be the team’s video coordinator after serving as an assistant coach at the College of Saint Rose last year.
“I am excited to add Blake to our staff,” said Brown. “He is a former captain and one of the hardest workers to ever wear a Great Danes uniform. I am looking forward to working with Blake to help him develop as a coach. I am confident he will have a positive impact on our program.”
Metcalf returns to UAlbany after spending one season as an assistant coach under Brian Beaury at Saint Rose. In his tenure with the Golden Knights, he was involved with all aspects of the program including player development, scouting, recruiting, travel, video exchange and strength & conditioning. Metcalf helped Saint Rose reach the NE-10 quarterfinals in 2014.
Last summer, Metcalf coached in three camps under Brown, Stony Brook coach Steve Pikiell and closer to home at Purdue with head coach Matt Painter. He was also a summer camp director at the Red Pride basketball camp before beginning his distinguished career as a Great Dane.
As a player under Will Brown from 2009-13, Metcalf was a three-time captain and appeared in a program-record 133 games. The Great Danes won 66 games in Metcalf’s career, including an all-time season high 24 contests in his senior season. He was a member of the 2011-12 squad that reached the CIT and the 2012-13 team that advanced to the NCAA Second Round. Metcalf graduated as the program’s Division I leader in career offensive rebounds (227) and ranks second in career rebounds with 598. He earned a degree in sociology with a minor in business administration.
“It feels great to be back where I played for four years,” said Metcalf. “UAlbany has always been a second home to me and I’m looking forward to coming back to be part of the staff. I can’t thank Coach Brown enough for giving me this opportunity, and I’m extremely excited to work under him to learn and grow as a coach myself.
