The University of Miami has agreed in principle to a two-year contract extension with men’s basketball coach Jim Larrañaga, UM Director of Athletics Blake James announced Tuesday. The extension will stretch Larrañaga’s contract through May 31, 2024.
“Coach Larrañaga is an integral part of our athletics department’s success, and he continues to demonstrate year after year that he is one of the best basketball coaches in the nation,” James said. “We are fortunate that he and Liz have made Miami their home and that they will remain a part of the Hurricane Family for years to come.”
In seven seasons at Miami, Larrañaga owns a 161-79 record, including a 75-49 mark in ACC play. He has led Miami to six postseason berths, including four NCAA Tournament bids, guiding the Hurricanes to a pair of NCAA Sweet 16 berths.
Miami went 22-10 during the 2017-18 season, its sixth 20-win campaign in seven years under Larrañaga. He is the first coach in program history to post six 20-win seasons. Miami joins Duke, North Carolina and Virginia as the only ACC schools to record six or more 20-win seasons in the last seven years. UM also is one of four ACC teams to reach the NCAA tournament in each of the last three years.

Larrañaga led Miami to its first ACC regular-season and tournament championships in 2013. The Hurricanes have won at least 10 ACC games in five of Larrañaga’s seven seasons at the helm of the program. Prior to Larrañaga’s arrival, Miami never had won 10 ACC games in a season.
A 34-year coaching veteran, Larrañaga has compiled a 631-413 career record and owns the 12th-most wins of all active Division I head coaches.
