The Brooklyn College Office of Recreation, Intramurals & Intercollegiate Athletics has announced the hiring of Rich Micallef as the Head Men’s Basketball Coach, effective immediately.
Coach Micallef is no stranger to BC Athletics having spent four seasons on the Men’s Basketball team from 1980-1984 and graduating as Brooklyn’s all-time leading scorer with 1,740 career points, a record that stood until 2010. Over his four-year career, Micallef was a multiple BC Athlete of the Year recipient and team MVP, as well as earning New York State Division III Basketball All-State Team and Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Metropolitan NY-NJ All-Star Team honors. For his efforts, Micallef would eventually have his #24 jersey retired and also be inducted into the BC Athletics Hall of Fame.
"I am so excited for the opportunity to come back home and I look forward to the challenges ahead," said Micallef. "I’d like to thank Athletic Director Bruce Filosa for giving me this opportunity to return to my roots and once again be a part of the rich history and tradition here at Brooklyn College."
Following a long and successful career in the private sector, Micallef returned to basketball as a head coach in 2003 and most recently served as head coach at Fair Lawn High School. While at Fair Lawn, Micallef took the reins of a struggling program and eventually rebuilt the team into a contender in the region, making the Bergen County Jamboree Tournament this past season for the first time in eight years. He also led his team to the state tournament that included a quarterfinals appearance, which had not been done in over a decade. Micallef was named the Bergen County Coaches Association (BCCA) Coach of the Year in 2014.
Micallef entered the coaching field after his illustrious playing career that included guiding Brooklyn to an NCAA Division III Final Four appearance, which led to BC moving up to Division I, serving as a full-time assistant coach and later a part-time volunteer assistant coach at BC.
Micallef, a graduate of Xaverian High School and member of its Athletic Hall of Fame, earned his BS in Physical Education from BC in 1985.
