Michigan assistant coaches get raises, extensions

Michigan’s basketball assistants are benefiting from the program’s recent success.

Jeff Meyer, Bacari Alexander and LaVall Jordan have agreed to contract extensions through the 2017-18 season, mlive.com reported today. All three previously received formal contracts in 2012, following the program’s first Big Ten title in 26 years.

This would mark a three-year extension for Jordan, whose contract was to run through 2015, and two-year extensions for Alexander and Meyer, whose deals were to run through 2016.

Jordan was slated to make $185,000 this upcoming season, Meyer $170,000 and Alexander $165,000. Each made $26,000 in performance bonuses for U-M’s outright Big Ten title and Elite Eight appearance this past season. Meyer received $25,000 as a stay bonus because he was still at U-M on April 1; the other two received $20,000 for their stay bonus.

Head coach John Beilein was rewarded last summer with a contract extension through 2019 and a raise that paid him $2.575 million this past season, including bonuses for winning the Big Ten title and reaching the Elite Eight. He will receive another $250,000 as a stay bonus next week.

Since the assistant coaches last received raises in 2012, U-M went to the NCAA title game in 2013 and won the Big Ten regular-season title by three games this past season.

The trio also has helped develop two first-round NBA draft picks — Trey Burke and Tim Hardaway Jr. last summer — and potentially three more in tonight’s NBA draft: Nik Stauskas, Mitch McGary and Glenn Robinson III.

Aside from Jordan being a finalist for the head coaching position at Butler last summer, none has been connected to jobs at other schools.
