Vermont head coach Mike Lonergan has been a "hot" name over the past few days. When Jim Larranaga took the Miami job last week, Lonergan’s name shot to the top of the list at George Mason. He’s even hotter now that the George Washington job is open – he has so many connections there that he is far and away the front runner. New GW AD Patrick Nero is the former Commissioner of the America East (Vermont’s conference). He has had a great relationship with Lonergan over the past six years and seen him win a lot of AE games (Lonergan is 126-68 during his teunure at Vermont). Also, Lonergan is from Maryland – he won a NCAA DIII national championship during a 12-year coaching stint at Catholic University in D.C. (251-88), and was an assistant at the University of Maryland. He’s got a lot going for him here. Also, I can confirm that last night he was given permission by Vermont AD Robert Corran to speak to Nero about the opening. I’ll keep you updated on this one as I hear more.
