Mineral Area CC opens; Strege named Assistant Coach North Dakota State

Luke Strege has been named as an assistant men’s basketball coach at North Dakota State.

Strege came to NDSU from Mineral Area College in Park Hills, Mo., where he served as head coach for eight seasons and posted a record of 199-46.

“We set out to challenge ourselves and continue to push our Bison basketball family to new heights with this hire,” Richman said. “We have accomplished just that with the addition of Luke, Christine, and their boys joining our family.”

“The combination of Luke’s high level of successful experience as a Division I assistant and as a head junior college coach make him a great fit,” continued Richman. “Luke has achieved his successes with the utmost character and integrity, which aligns with our core values. We’re thrilled to welcome Luke and his family into our Bison family, and continue to push for the betterment of those around us – and ultimately championship levels of success on and off the court.”

Strege led Mineral Area College to an undefeated regular season and Elite Eight appearance at the NJCAA National Tournament in 2020-21, one year after posting a record of 30-2. In his eight seasons at the helm, the Cardinals never won fewer than 22 games in a season, and never lost more than nine.

“We as a family are thrilled to be joining the Bison basketball family. We are here because this is the perfect fit for us,” said Strege. “This is a tremendous basketball program backed by a caring and supportive community. We believe in North Dakota State University, and we look forward to impacting both the basketball program and the Fargo community every day.”

Strege coached five seasons as an assistant at Division I Eastern Kentucky from 2010-15. EKU won the Ohio Valley Conference title and earned an NCAA Tournament berth in 2014, while posting the best two-year stretch in school history.

He spent six years at Division II Quincy University in Illinois from 2004-10, earning promotion to associate head coach. Strege served as a graduate assistant at Georgia (2000-01) and then Western Kentucky (2001-03) to start his coaching career.

Strege graduated from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in 1999 with a bachelor’s degree in marketing.  He and his wife, Christine, have three sons, Mason, Griffin, and Jaxon.
