University of Minnesota head men’s basketball coach Ben Johnson has announced two promotions within his staff. Josh Adel has been promoted from video coordinator to assistant coach, while Collin Southworth has been promoted from recruiting coordinator to head video coordinator. Adel now joins Marcus Jenkins, Jason Kemp and Dave Thorson as coaches. The NCAA approved the addition of a fourth assistant per team this past summer.
“We’re thrilled to elevate Josh as an assistant coach and Collin as our head video coordinator,” Johnson said. “Josh is entering his 10th season with Gopher Basketball and has been an integral part of our program since 2013-14. We’re looking forward to bringing his skill set on the court with us in this expanded role. Since joining the program in 2021, Collin has been an invaluable resource as our recruiting coordinator. We’re excited to promote him in the head video coordinator role as he continues to improve our program.”
Adel enters his 10th season with Golden Gopher men’s basketball and third year as a part of Coach Johnson’s staff. Adel began his Gopher tenure as the operations director in 2013-14. He moved into the video coordinator role in 2014-15, where he prepared film and assisted with scouting reports. The 2023-24 season will mark his first year as an assistant coach. During his time at Minnesota, Adel was a part of Minnesota’s two NCAA appearances in 2017 and 2019 as well as NIT appearances in 2013 where the Gophers won the NIT championship.
Prior to his time at Minnesota, Adel spent the 2012-13 season at Florida International and five years with the Florida Gators. Adel began his stint with the Gators in 2007 and was promoted to head manager in August of 2009. As head manager, Adel was responsible for organizing the annual Gator Coaches Clinic. He also attended practices and assisted with the Florida scouting reports. During his time with UF, the Gators made three NCAA Tournament appearances, including two in the Elite Eight (2011 & 2012). Florida also advanced to the NIT Quarterfinals (2009) and the NIT Semifinals (2008).
Adel received a bachelor’s degree in biology from Florida in 2012.
Southworth joined the Golden Gopher program in 2021 and came to Minnesota after a two-year stint at Olivet Nazarene University. At ONU, Southworth assisted with daily floor instruction and skill development as well as prepare film, scouting reports and recruiting. He was also the head coach of the junior varsity program in 2020-21.
Prior to his time at Olivet Nazarene, Southworth was a student assistant at Xavier from 2017-19. A Xavier student manager himself from 2016-17, Southworth was also an event operator with Hoop Group Academic Elite Camp from 2018-19.
Southworth graduated from Xavier in 2019 with a sports management degree. He went on to earn a master’s degree at Olivet Nazarene University in organization leadership in May of 2021.
