Minot State University head basketball coach Matt Murken has been busy in his short stint with the Beavers.
Murken, hired July 25, 2012, announced Monday he has filled all three vacant men’s basketball coaching positions. Jack Nelson joins the Beavers as Minot State’s full time assistant coach, while Bobby Howard and Byron Jones have been hired to fill graduate assistant coaching positions.
Nelson, originally from Dillon, Colo., comes to Minot State after one season at Bellevue University in Bellevue, Neb., where he was the team’s top assistant and served as the recruiting coordinator. In that one season, Nelson helped guide Bellevue to a 28-6 record and the MCAC Conference regular season and tournament championships.
Howard, originally from Great Falls, Mont., comes to Minot State after a stellar career for Montana State University. Howard played from 2007-2011, averaging 15 points and seven rebounds in his senior season.
He played professional basketball in Sibiu, Romania and was drafted by the NBA Developmental League by the Reno Bighorns. He had the opportunity of playing with members of the Atlanta Hawks, Memphis Grizzlies and Sacramento Kings.
Jones is no stranger to the MSU Dome as he played three seasons for Jamestown College. The Glenarden, Md., native earned All-Dakota Athletic Conference honors, scoring over 1,100 points as a Jimmie. He helped JC to a 25-7 record during his senior season and a berth in the NAIA Division II national tournament.
