Monmouth Basketball Staff Update

Monmouth University Men’s Basketball Head Coach King Rice announced changes to his coaching staff ahead of the 2024-25 season. Former Hawk Je’lon Hornbeak, who won two regular season titles as a student-athlete in 2016 and 2017, will join the staff as an assistant coach. Entering his 14th season on Rice’s staff, Rick Callahan has been named General Manager of Basketball, while Micah Seaborn will elevate to the position of Assistant Coach for Player Development.

Hornbeak was a major part of both the 2015-16 and 2016-17 MAAC regular season championship teams, starting 49 games and playing in 68 across two seasons with 706 points. He was named to the MAAC All-Tournament Team in 2016 after going a perfect 7-7 from the field and 5-5 from three in the championship game. Hornbeak led MU to back-to-back NIT appearances, and helped set the program records for wins in a season with 28 and winning streak at 17.

“I’m super excited to welcome Je’lon back to our program,” said Rice. “His time here as a player helped us produce some of the best seasons in my 13 years. We look forward to him taking this next step in his career in becoming an assistant basketball coach. Je’lon brings a wealth of experience on and off the floor and will be a great mentor to our players.”

Callahan, who coached his 1,300th collegiate game this past season, will now assume role of General Manager of Basketball. He has been a part of Rice’s staff since 2011 and has over 40 years of college coaching experience.

“Coach Callahan has been my mentor since I was 13 years old and he has been with me since Day One at Monmouth,” said Rice. “With the changing landscape of college basketball, Ricky is going to become the GM of the program. With his wealth of experience, Ricky has done every part of college basketball. He will continue to be a major part of everything that we do, but he is adding overseeing the NIL portion of our program. This is a major step for Monmouth Basketball to move forward in today’s landscape and I’m thankful that Coach Callahan is willing to take on these extra responsibilities.”

Entering his second full season on staff, Seaborn takes on the role of Assistant Coach for Player Development after serving as the Director of Player Development in 2023-24. Seaborn, a former Hawk that played three seasons under Rice, scoring 1,144 points and winning a pair of regular season crowns, spent 2021-22 as a volunteer under Rice while completing his degree. He was a part of the 2021-22 staff that helped MU to a 21-win season and trip to the MAAC championship game.

“Micah being named an assistant coach is another step in his goal to become a head coach,” said Rice. “I’ve been very fortunate to be on his journey, from a player to now being a coach and the growth that Micah has shown in that time is incomparable. He will continue to get better and become one of the better coaches in college basketball.”

These changes are effective immediately ahead of the 2024-25 season.
