Monson adds three to Eastern Washington Basketball Staff

Eastern Washington Head Basketball Coach Dan Monson announced that Alex Hobbs will move up the Assistant Coach, Richie Frahm will be added to the staff as the Special Assistant to the Head Coach and last, Rhys McVay as Video Coordinator.

Alex Hobbs

Alex Hobbs joined Eastern in July 2024 as a graduate assistant, taking on the role of Director of Player Development. He arrived after a successful stint at Carroll College, where he served as the head assistant coach for one season. During his time there, Hobbs helped guide the team to a Frontier Conference championship game appearance and a berth in the national tournament.

Before transitioning into coaching, Hobbs was a standout guard at Boise State University. A dynamic scorer, he became a member of the Broncos’ 1,000-point club. In 2018, he was named the Mountain West Conference Sixth Man of the Year, and followed that up in 2019 with All-Conference honors. Over his collegiate career, Hobbs appeared in 120 games with 42 starts, helping Boise State earn two NIT appearances.

After college, Hobbs played professionally for the Kordall Steelers in Luxembourg, Germany. In his lone season overseas, he led the league in scoring and was named First Team All-Import.

Monson on Hobs

“The son of a coach, you can see every day that coaching is in his blood. His playing accolades as well as his ability to still go on the court and demonstrate what he is talking about gives him immediate credibility with our players. Alex has a great way about him, not getting too high or too low – and players learn and feed off his personality. Not only is he beyond his years as a student of the game, he connects with recruits immediately – and has an innate ability to evaluate players. Alex is a rising star in our profession.”

Richie Frahm

Richie Frahm joins the Eagles as the Special Assistant to the Head Coach, bringing with him a wealth of experience from his time as a professional basketball player. Over a five-year span in the NBA, Frahm appeared in 140 games with stops in Seattle, Portland, Minnesota, Houston, and the Los Angeles Clippers.

Before his professional career, Frahm played collegiately at Gonzaga under current Eastern Washington head coach Dan Monson. A key contributor throughout his four years with the Zags, he started every game during his senior season and earned All-WCC honors twice. Frahm appeared in 130 games during his time at Gonzaga, leaving a lasting impact on the program.

Monson on Frahm

“The two most important attributes an assistant can bring to a head coach is familiarity and loyalty – Richie checks both boxes.  Playing for me, having success under me, and making it to the NBA gives him instant credibility with the current players and his loyalty is unquestioned. His familiarity with EWU and the people in this area is also such a plus for our program.”

Rhys McVay

Rhys is entering his second season with Eastern Washington University as a graduate assistant and video coordinator. In this role, he contributes across multiple areas, including filming practices and assisting players during workouts. Prior to joining Eastern Washington, Rhys played collegiate basketball for five seasons at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, Arizona. Although injuries sidelined him for three of those seasons, they also sparked his passion for coaching. During that time, he served as an honorary assistant player/coach, where he was actively involved in developing scouting reports and game plans. Rhys earned his degree in Applied Biology while at Embry-Riddle.

Monson on McVay

“To be successful in this profession you must be a grinder, and Rhys is just that. There is no job too small or too big for him. He is one of those guys behind the scenes who may not get the credit but is invaluable for the work he does. The players and coaches, however, are all aware of the thankless jobs he does, and he is very much loved and appreciated throughout our program. Rhys is an Eag, meaning he is from the area and proud to be here. We are lucky to have him in our program and appreciate his loyalty and commitment.”
