William Monts, assistant men’s basketball coach at Georgia Southwestern State University in Americus, has been named head men’s coach and sports information director at Warren Wilson College. He officially assumes his duties in June.
Monts, 28, succeeds Greg Neeley, who left the program after one season in which he guided the Owls to the national championship in Division II of the U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association. Monts’ appointment, announced by WWC Athletic Director Stacey Enos, follows a two-month national search that was launched in early March, shortly after Neeley’s unexpected resignation.
"William Monts is a great fit and the right hire to usher our program forward," Enos said. "He brings the type of professionalism that our program has become accustomed to. With his leadership I’m confident our program will continue to elevate."
A native of Irmo, S.C., Monts was assistant men’s coach for five seasons at Anderson University before joining Georgia Southwestern in 2012. Georgia Southwestern and Anderson each compete in NCAA Division II.
Monts also served as head junior varsity coach for two of his five years at Anderson. Anderson’s varsity record during his five seasons there was 98-56; Georgia Southwestern finished 13-14 this past season.
"I feel humbled and privileged to become a part of the Warren Wilson family," Monts said. "I could not have found a more beautiful campus, and I know that I am about to begin work in one of the most encouraging and true community environments in the country.
"I am extremely thankful to President Steve Solnick, Dean of Students Paul Perrine and Stacey Enos for the opportunity to become the new head men’s basketball coach and SID. I have had the opportunity to meet most of the returning players and am excited about next year’s team."
Monts takes over a men’s program that compiled a 35-19 record over the past two years, including the 2013 national title season. The Owls finished this past season with a 12-game winning streak en route to the USCAA national championship.
"I am looking forward to continuing the success that has begun here at Warren Wilson," Monts said, "and I plan to establish a program that the Warren Wilson community, student body, alumni and future WWC Owls can be proud of."
